How to Redesign a Business Website Without Losing SEO

A redesign can improve clarity, performance, accessibility, and enquiries while preserving search visibility. The risk comes from treating the old website as disposable. Existing URLs may carry links, history, relevance, and visitor expectations that the new design still needs to respect.

Key takeaway

Preserve valuable URLs where possible. When a URL must change, map it to the closest relevant replacement with a permanent server-side redirect and update every signal to the new address.

1. Create an inventory before designing

  • Export every indexable URL from the sitemap, analytics, Search Console, and a crawl.
  • Record page title, canonical, status code, organic traffic, conversions, backlinks, and purpose where available.
  • Identify pages that rank, earn links, generate qualified enquiries, or support important navigation.
  • Mark pages to keep, improve, combine, redirect, or intentionally remove.
  • Save the inventory as the launch acceptance checklist.

2. Preserve good URLs unless change creates real value

A visual redesign does not require a new URL structure. Keeping stable, descriptive URLs reduces migration risk and avoids unnecessary redirects. Change a URL when it is genuinely misleading, technically problematic, or part of a carefully planned consolidation.

Do not change URLs merely to make every address shorter or to insert a new keyword. The benefit is often smaller than the disruption.

3. Build a one-to-one redirect map

  • Map each retired URL to the closest page that satisfies the same visitor intent.
  • Use permanent server-side 301 or 308 redirects for permanent moves.
  • Redirect directly to the final URL instead of creating chains.
  • Do not send every removed page to the homepage; irrelevant redirects may behave like soft 404s.
  • Keep redirects for at least a year and preferably longer when old links still exist.

4. Update every internal search signal

Internal links

Link directly to the new URL instead of relying on redirects inside the site.

Canonicals

Give each new page an accurate self-referencing canonical using the preferred production domain.

Metadata and headings

Carry forward meaning and relevance while improving weak copy; do not erase high-performing content without evidence.

Structured data

Transfer only valid, visible facts and update identifiers or URLs.

Sitemap

Publish a clean sitemap containing the new canonical, indexable URLs.

Robots directives

Remove staging noindex rules from production and allow crawlers to reach old URLs so redirects can be seen.

5. Test before changing the domain or routes

  • Crawl the staging site and compare it with the URL inventory.
  • Check status codes, canonical tags, titles, descriptions, headings, internal links, images, forms, and structured data.
  • Test redirects in bulk, including uppercase, trailing-slash, parameter, and legacy variants where relevant.
  • Confirm analytics and Search Console ownership before launch.
  • Test mobile layouts, keyboard access, performance, and the highest-value conversion paths.
  • Create a rollback and incident owner before DNS or routing changes.

6. Launch and monitor

Temporary search fluctuations can happen while search engines recrawl and process a move. A careful migration reduces avoidable damage but cannot promise unchanged rankings.

If your current website is outdated or structurally unclear, tell Bazalel what the redesign needs to protect and improve before visual work begins.

  1. 01

Deploy redirects and the new site together.

  2. 02

Run the full URL list against production immediately.

  3. 03

Submit the new sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

  4. 04

Inspect the homepage and representative service pages as live URLs.

  5. 05

Monitor indexing, traffic, conversions, 404s, redirect errors, and server logs daily during the first week.

  6. 06

Review weekly until crawling and performance stabilize.

  7. 07

Update valuable external links, profiles, campaigns, and citations where practical.
